History of Sabinov

The first record about the royal village Sabinov dates back to 1248. An important turning point in its development was January 28th, 1299 when the Hungarian king Ondrej III granted Spiš privileges ? election of the magistrate and the priest, right to a court, to hunt and fish, exemption on taxis, toll, duties and military service. In 1405 Sabinov was promoted to a free royal town. Handicrafts and trade were developed. At the end of the 15th Century Sabinov bacame a member of Pentopolitana ? the union of Eastslovak towns. Košice, Prešov, Bardejov and Levoča belonged to it, too. The era from the 16th ? 18th Century was the time of prosperity; later the town declined. The stagnation of the development went on in the 19th century and in the time of the first ČSR.
